How To Make Real Change In Costa Rica: A Locals Guide To Volunteering Your Time

Is Volunteering in Costa Rica right for you?

Costa Rica is a vibrant country known for its stunning landscapes, rich biodiversity, and warm-hearted people. Volunteering in Costa Rica offers a unique chance to immerse yourself in this beautiful setting while making a meaningful impact. Whether you’re passionate about conservation, education, or community development, there are plenty of opportunities to help and learn.

While you may be able to manage without Spanish initially, as you spend more time here, it will become necessary to learn the language to some extent. You may also encounter some cultural differences as you adapt to the “Pura Vida” way of life, which is deeply rooted in the local culture. Patience will be essential as you make these adjustments.

Conservation and Environmental Projects

One of the most popular ways to volunteer in Costa Rica is through conservation and environmental projects. The country’s rich biodiversity makes it an ideal place to get involved in preserving endangered species and habitats. You can work in national parks, wildlife reserves, or on specific projects such as the protection of sea turtles, reforestation efforts, or sustainable farming. These projects not only help conserve the environment but also allow volunteers to work closely with local experts by gaining hands-on experience. Some of my favorites are:

Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center – La Garita, Alajuela

Rescate is a dream for the animal lover. They are a very large, organized rescue that has earned respect from Ticos and foreigners alike. Their main income source is the visitor portion of the facility, which, for lack of a better word, is the closest thing Costa Rica has to a zoo. (FYI: Costa Rica has closed all of the state zoos this year.) There are plenty of volunteer opportunities with your meals and accommodation covered. Rescate is also home to “Grecia”, a toucan whose upper beak was destroyed in an act of violence. Rescate managed to 3D print him a new beak and he is now a permanent resident.

Costa Rica Animal Rescue Center

Located in La Guacima, Alajuela, this mid-size animal rescue has opportunities year-round to help with vet care, animal care, and facility care. Heads up that there is a $50/day fee for meals and accommodation.

Community and Education Initiatives

For those interested in working directly with people, community and education initiatives offer rewarding volunteer opportunities. These programs often involve teaching English, assisting in local schools, or providing vocational training to underprivileged communities. By sharing your knowledge and skills, you can make a significant difference in the lives of many Costa Ricans, particularly in rural areas where resources are limited.

La Paz Bilingual School

La Paz has several campuses in Guanacaste and has become a prestigious IB World School. Volunteers participate in the goings-on of the school and can be found leading classes or assisting throughout the day. La Paz offers volunteers a homestay with select families whose children have benefited from scholarships to the school, offering a genuine immersion into the local culture.

Cloud Forest School

Located in Monteverde, this school is situated in a stunning location. This K-6 school provides a range of volunteer opportunities, from serving as a teaching assistant to assisting in the development of the school’s curriculum to helping with fundraising efforts to support the 85% Tico children they serve. You’ll get to live with a local host family and be immersed in one of the most beautiful places in Costa Rica every day.

Health and Wellness Programs

Health and wellness volunteering is a field where you can contribute meaningfully. Opportunities range from assisting in medical clinics to promoting healthy lifestyles and wellness in Costa Rican communities. Medical professionals and students can lend their expertise to improve healthcare services, while other volunteers can engage in campaigns around nutrition, hygiene, and mental health.

Vida Volunteer

Vida Volunteer focuses on health education. Costa Rica is blessed with socialized healthcare, which is a given right to any Tico and legal resident of the country. While there are options for care, some rural communities are simply too far to get access to the education and resources they need. This is where Vida Volunteer comes in. They hold 1-2 week medical and dental care tours around the country to help bring information to the communities that need it most. Volunteers stay in small, local hotels in the communities they visit and must cover their costs.

FIMRC – Costa Rica Chapter

FIMRC provides medical care to underinsured and impoverished families who live right outside of San Jose. Many of these families are refugees who fled political turmoil in Nicaragua but have been unable to join Costa Rica’s socialized healthcare program. FIMRC is well organized and volunteers can expect to spend their days shadowing Doctors and providing health education programs to patients. Costs vary depending on the length of stay.

Peace Corps – Costa Rica Project (Long-term)

I once had a friend who, right after college, volunteered for the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic. She dedicated two years of her life to helping women obtain micro-loans and assisted them in launching and running their small businesses. She enjoyed the experience so much that she extended her tour and then worked as a professional for the Peace Corps. Every former volunteer I’ve met has said that the experience had a profound impact on their lives. The Peace Corps has projects in Costa Rica. Although their volunteer criteria are more strict than others, I genuinely wish I had known about them when I was 22 and could have spent a couple of years helping others abroad.

Volunteering in Costa Rica provides an opportunity to give back to a community while exploring one of the world’s most beautiful countries. There is a diverse range of opportunities available, ensuring you will find a project that aligns with your interests and skills. Pura Vida.
